To be honest, this isn't a well thought out journal-post (really, have any of my journal posts up to this point been well thought out?).
Anyway, I guess that's as good a start as any I can come up with.
'It' in this case, can really be whatever you want it to be, a hobby, a job, a relationship etc etc.
Recently though, I've been thinking about mathematics and different forms of (other) art, how they coexist in different forms, often one overshadowing the other.
I have quite a few friends who are artists in one way or another, and I'm proud of knowing all of them, not only because they are artists but really, because they are my friends.
"What does that have anything to do with it?" you might ask.
Well, quite a lot really.
Do you have the view of 'it' that 'it' is it's own reward?
Another part is: is it supposed to be enjoyed with others or only yourself?
Yet another part is if it's useful. Does it have to be useful to you, or others?
You propably love drawing, painting, photagraphing or something similar since you are on a site like deviantart.
And I can also make the assumption that you love sharing your work with others, not only because you want to further develop your skills but also because you, and the others honestly appriciate art.
So, now, the first question again. Is it a waste of time?
My answer is: Absolutely not, sure it might not be practical, but that doesn't mean it's useless or a waste of time to make.
Your answer? Well I don't know, why, did you expect me to know or possibly help you make up your mind?
Maybe this post was a waste of time reading you might think.
But I think of it this way:
Did I enjoy writing this journal entry?
May my friends enjoy this journal entry?
Sure, why not, and even if they didn't, I still don't think it was a waste of time writing it.
I took quite about half an hour to write this. And I must say..
I do feel good about myself.
